River Flooding - River flooding is sometimes called Fluvial flooding after the latin word for river fluvius. It is usually the most destructive form of flooding. This is due to the two issues of;

  • Building homes on river flood plains and the increase in such actions over the past 30 years &

  • The increase in river flooding due to changing autumn and winter rainfall

These two issues have combined to cause severe flooding in recent years. These include floods in many towns in Ireland in November 2009 and in December 2015 and indeed at other times in the recent past. River flood prediction is therefore important and affects a very large number of people.

In certain areas and at certain times of the year river flooding combines with coastal flooding, groundwater flooding, flooding from manmade sources such as dams and canals and excessive rainfall to cause even more serious flooding. These combined events have also occurred frequently in the past.

Prediction of these combined probability events is additionally difficult to river flooding prediction on its own. therefore river flood prediction is the most important form of flood outlook and alert
